Let's talk about a buzzword that's all over the internet these days: 'habits". You've probably read a lot about how habits can make or break us. But what exactly are these 'habits'?

I want to decode and simplify this heavy buzzword!

To me, 'habits" are the little choices we make every day, so often that they begin to define us. It's these choices that lead to us being labeled as punctual, lazy, problem solvers, or maybe even troublemakers!

Now let's turn the spotlight on us, the designers and creatives. All of us have our own habits and decisions that we hold on to so tightly that they become second nature to us. Some habits help us move forward, but others can really slow us down.

It's important to take a good look at the choices and actions we make every day. Why? Because they might be stopping us from doing our best work.

Here are the 7 habits that affect our creativity and work πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

Habit #1: Artist mentality
Your work is not art; projects that offer just 'creative satisfaction' are not enough. Pick projects that justify the quality of work as well as your time, experience, and effort.

Habit #2: Entitlement
It's good to know your value, but you also need to know your skills and skill gaps. It can be challenging to get senior positions or high-paying projects without demonstrating your work and expertise and even more difficult if you do not want to do the work to get there.

Habit #3: Self-criticism
Quit s
ulking now and start embracing your small wins. Our brains are hard-wired to respond to rewards. No matter how small, these wins are the rewards that keep you motivated in the long term. Tracking those small achievements helps to boost your confidence and keep going!

Habit #4: Self-sufficiency
It's g
reat to be the master of your destiny, but getting ahead in your career takes more than one person. Ask for help when you need it. Your peers, colleagues, and bosses are the ones who can help you truly overcome your impasse.

Habit #5: Avoiding the money talk
Money is e
ssential to keep your work and motivation going. Do not hesitate to follow up after sending the invoice. Your clients are busy, and a gentle reminder will get you the money you worked hard for. Most clients expect a gentle follow-up as it demonstrates your ability to act professionally.

Habit #6: Not finishing the work
I know t
hat self-doubt can throw you into a downward spiral of overthinking, but to move forward and get better, you must finish what you have started. Please do not leave your work halfway, do not leave the application in your drafts; send it out, and make progress! If you want to start shipping work for real, you can also check out my e-book. It's a quick read that gives you hacks and practices you can use for a lifetime.

Habit #7: Living in a cocoon
Step o
ut of an environment where you feel protected and safe. No, I do not want you to bungee jump πŸ˜‰. Just engage with industry trends, new tools, and software, and stay abreast of where the world is going.

What do you think? Are you willing to change these?

πŸ’¬ A quote and a question:

β€œDo not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”
–– John Wooden

πŸ‘‰πŸΌ A question to think about:
Is there something you don’t have control over that interferes with your work?
